INTRODUCTION TO THE OUTDOORS: Half Day facilitated walk

 

Aims:

  • To gain a basic familiarity with the countryside code and navigating using footpaths and maps

  • To gain some understanding of interesting features of landscape, flora and fauna in the local area

  • To begin to understand how to work as a team when on a longer country walk in a group

  • To foster a sense of belonging in the countryside local to Bristol and in doing so, introduce young people to aspects of their shared cultural heritage beyond the city of Bristol.

Kit list:

  • Participants should wear comfortable clothing appropriate to the weather including hat and suncream if sunny, and coat if wet.

  • Shoes: comfortable shoes or trainers will be adequate.  If the weather is wet a spare pair of shoes and socks for the journey home would be advisable if walking boots or similar are not available.

  • Small rucksack, water bottle and snack – eg fruit, energy bar, etc

  • Mobile phones are not advised, apart from those of adult leaders

  • No spending money will be needed

Location:

Parking, toilet and dry space for briefing are at Cross Tree Centre, Bristol Road, Wraxall, BS48 1LB. The walk will take place over public footpaths in the surrounding area.

Activity:

  • Arrival and briefing – 15 mins

    • Toilet stop

    • Safety briefing and kit check

    • Groups issued with maps and given reminders of OS map basics

    • Countryside behaviour and expectations: roads, animals, paths and gates

    • Participants issued with ‘Spotter Checklist’ to help focus the walk

  • Guided walk – approx.90 mins

    • During the walk we will pause for opportunities to discuss landscape, animal, crop plant and tree life, and further aspects of navigation safety and the countryside code.

    • Depending on the confidence of participants and the decision of the leader, there could be an opportunity for smaller groups to navigate between two points independently while still under supervision.

  • Return and reflection – 15 mins

    • We will finish with an opportunity to reflect on the experience as a group before departure.

£100 per group of up to 16
